Why Units-Calc exists
A lot of online calculators give you a number but do not explain where it came from. Units-Calc is being built to do more than that. Each page aims to show the result, the method, the formula, worked examples and the common mistakes people make when using the calculation.
The focus is on simple, practical tools that people can use for everyday tasks: checking a unit conversion, estimating a bill, planning a journey, comparing tyre sizes, working out running pace, calculating percentages, or understanding a health and fitness estimate.
Who built Units-Calc?
Units-Calc started as a side project of mine — I'm a full-time engineer, and I wanted to build simple, useful calculators for everyday problems. The goal was to bring the same mindset I use at work into something practical for daily life: clear methods, clear writing, and tools that are easy to use and easy to understand.
In engineering, a lot of the job is checking assumptions, applying formulas carefully, comparing options, and catching mistakes before they turn into real problems. I've tried to bring that same approach to Units-Calc — showing how each calculation works, presenting the result clearly, and being upfront when an answer is just an estimate.

How calculators are made
1. Start with a real question
Each tool is built around something people actually need to work out, such as “how much will this journey cost?” or “what does this tyre size change do?”

Where possible, calculators show the formula used so the result is not just a black box.

Accuracy, assumptions and trust
Units-Calc aims to be accurate, transparent and useful, but many calculations depend on user inputs, assumptions and real-world conditions. A fuel cost estimate depends on fuel price and mpg. A bill estimate depends on your tariff. A tyre-size comparison depends on labelled tyre dimensions, while real tyre measurements can vary by brand and wear.
