How it works
This converter uses litres as the central base unit. When you enter a value, the calculator first converts that value into litres, then converts the litre value into every other unit shown on the page. This avoids inconsistent chained conversions and keeps metric, imperial, US, cooking and cubic units aligned.
Volume conversion is usually a ratio-based conversion. For example, 1 litre equals 1,000 millilitres, so litres to millilitres simply multiplies by 1,000. However, imperial and US volume units can be easy to confuse because a UK gallon is not the same as a US gallon, and a UK pint is not the same as a US pint.
Formula used
For most volume conversions, the calculator uses this two-step formula:
converted value = value in litres ÷ litre factor of target unit
Common factors include: 1 L = 1,000 ml, 1 UK pint ≈ 0.568261 L, 1 US pint ≈ 0.473176 L, 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 L, 1 US gallon ≈ 3.78541 L, 1 m³ = 1,000 L and 1 cm³ = 1 ml.
Worked example
Example: convert 2 litres to millilitres
Litres to millilitres is a metric conversion based on 1 L = 1,000 ml.
So, 2 litres is 2,000 ml.
Example: convert 10 litres to UK gallons
One UK gallon is 4.54609 litres.
So, 10 litres is about 2.20 UK gallons.
Common mistakes
Using the wrong gallon
UK gallons and US gallons are different sizes. This matters for fuel, water, recipes and imported measurements.
Confusing UK and US pints
A UK pint is about 568 ml, while a US pint is about 473 ml. Check which system the source is using.
Treating volume as weight
Millilitres and grams are not always interchangeable. Water is close, but flour, oil, sugar and honey have different densities.
Rounding too early
For cooking this may not matter much, but for chemistry, engineering or dosing, keep more precision and round at the end.
