How percentage calculations work

A percentage means “out of 100”. To find a percentage of a number, divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number.

X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y

Percentage increase and decrease compare the change between an old value and a new value.

Percentage change = ((new value − old value) ÷ old value) × 100

Reverse percentages work backwards from the final value by dividing by the percentage multiplier.

Common uses for percentages
