Sources and assumptions
This calculator is designed for planning and comparison. The results are estimates based on the usage, tariff and standing charge entered by the user. Actual gas bills can vary by supplier, region, meter type, payment method, tariff, seasonal usage, boiler efficiency, insulation, household behaviour and any fixed or special rates on the account.
- Typical gas usage benchmarks: the benchmark figures use illustrative annual gas consumption bands, including a medium-use benchmark of around 11,500 kWh/year based on Ofgem Typical Domestic Consumption Value style assumptions. These are for comparison only.
- Energy price cap assumptions: preset gas unit rates and standing charges are illustrative. Ofgem price cap values change over time and vary by region and payment method. Users should replace preset values with the exact figures shown on their own bill.
- Seasonal estimates: the seasonal chart uses a simple demand-profile assumption where gas use is higher in winter and lower in summer. It does not model actual weather, thermostat settings, boiler performance, occupancy or insulation.
- Savings estimates: savings opportunities are broad illustrative scenarios. Real savings depend on the property, heating system, current controls and how the household uses heating and hot water.
- Carbon reporting: this page focuses on cost. If carbon estimates are added, use the latest UK government greenhouse gas conversion factors and label the year of the factor used.
