How VAT calculations work

VAT is calculated as a percentage of the net price. The gross price is the net price plus the VAT amount.

VAT amount = net price × VAT rate ÷ 100
Gross price = net price + VAT amount

To remove VAT from a gross price, divide by the VAT multiplier. For example, with 20% VAT, the multiplier is 1.20, so the net price is gross ÷ 1.20.

Net price = gross price ÷ (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100)

Note: VAT rules and rates can vary by country, product/service type and business circumstances. This calculator performs the arithmetic only.
