How it works
The calculator divides the marks achieved by the total marks available, then multiplies by 100 to get the percentage. If a weighting is entered, it multiplies the percentage by the assessment weighting to estimate how much that assessment contributes to the overall module or course mark.
Formula used
weighted contribution = percentage × assessment weighting ÷ 100
target marks required = target percentage ÷ 100 × total marks
marks still needed = target marks required − marks achieved
Worked example
Example: 42 marks out of 60
percentage = 70%
If this assessment is worth 30% of the module, the weighted contribution is 70 × 30 ÷ 100 = 21 percentage points.
Common mistakes
Forgetting the total marks
A score of 35 can be excellent out of 40, but weak out of 100. Always enter the correct total.
Confusing percentage with weighting
A 70% score on an assessment worth 40% contributes 28 percentage points, not 70 points, to the final mark.
Using the wrong grade boundaries
Grade boundaries differ between institutions, courses and exam boards. Check your official mark scheme.
Rounding too early
Keep decimal places until the final result, especially when calculating weighted averages.
