How it works

A fraction means division. To convert a fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.

decimal = numerator ÷ denominator

Mixed numbers are first changed into improper fractions. For example, 2 3/4 becomes 11/4, then 11 ÷ 4 = 2.75.

Some decimals terminate, such as 1/4 = 0.25. Others recur forever, such as 1/3 = 0.333…

Put the decimal over a power of 10 and simplify. For example, 0.125 = 125/1000 = 1/8.
