How discount calculations work

A discount reduces the original price by a percentage or fixed amount. To find a percentage discount, multiply the original price by the discount rate.

saving = original price × discount % ÷ 100
final price = original price − saving

To reverse a discount, divide the sale price by the remaining percentage. For example, if £75 is the price after 25% off, it represents 75% of the original price, so the original price is £75 ÷ 0.75 = £100.

original price = sale price ÷ (1 − discount % ÷ 100)

Stacked discounts are applied one after another. A 20% discount followed by 10% off is not 30% off; it is 28% off because the second discount applies to the already reduced price.

Common questions

How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage, then subtract that saving from the original price.
How do I reverse a discount?
Divide the sale price by the remaining percentage as a decimal. For 25% off, divide by 0.75.
Are stacked discounts added together?
No. They are applied sequentially. 20% off then 10% off gives a 28% effective discount, not 30%.
